Putting Pen to Rest: When a Story Isn’t Ready to Shine

As writers, we often embark on literary journeys filled with excitement, hope, and a vision of our finished work captivating readers’ imaginations. But what happens when, after weeks of dedicated research and writing, we realize that our latest project isn’t quite ready for the spotlight?

Recently, I found myself at such a crossroads. Immersed in the rich tapestry of Florida’s mid to late 1960s, I delved into a historical-based novel with a protagonist whose journey didn’t end on a happy note. Yet, as I painstakingly crafted the narrative, I struggled to unearth a silver lining, something positive for readers to grasp onto amidst the darkness.

After sharing the synopsis and outline with trusted friends and fellow authors, I faced a harsh truth: perhaps now wasn’t the time for this book. Despite my passion and effort, the story lacked a resonance, a depth that would leave a lasting impact. It was a difficult realization, but sometimes, acknowledging the need for patience and introspection is crucial in the writing process.

So, I’ve made the decision to let this project rest for a while, allowing it to marinate on the shelf like a fine wine. Who knows, perhaps with time, the storyline will mature and evolve into something truly remarkable. It’s a lesson in humility, recognizing that not every endeavor will immediately bear fruit, and that’s okay.

Have any of you experienced a similar journey in your writing endeavors? Have you poured weeks, even months, into a project only to find it lacking in resonance or readability? If so, I’d love to hear your stories and insights. After all, shared experiences often pave the way for growth and understanding in our craft.

But fear not, friends. While one story may be on pause, the journey continues. I’ve returned to familiar territory, crafting a sequel to my debut novel, “A Darkness Between the Stars.” It’s a return to characters and worlds I know intimately, a chance to explore new horizons while staying grounded in the familiar.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing notes and excerpts from my latest work in progress. I invite you to join me on this new adventure, to immerse yourselves in the flickering glow of creativity and imagination.

So, until next time, keep writing, keep dreaming, and remember that even when one story stalls, there are countless others waiting to be told.
